Paying Back Debt
Believe it or not, many people have had success paying their debt off without the help of a financial consult or advisor. However, that doesn't mean you don't need a plan to get started. By planning out a long-term budget, you should be able to consolidate debt and borrow more if necessary. Here's a look at a detailed debt repayment plan that many of our visitors have found effective:
- If you don't have an organized budget, now is the perfect time to create one. It can be difficult figuring out how much you owe to which lenders, so you might want to pull up a copy of your credit report. You can view your report for free online from one of the major credit bureaus. Credit reports are very detailed and should contain all the information you need regarding your debt.
- Now that you know exactly how much you owe and to whom, you can begin making a list. Your list should contain all of the pertinent information for each debt you have. For instance, list all of your credit card debts with the total amount owed, minimum monthly payment, due date, and interest rate.
- At this point, most financial experts would recommend you rank your debts in the order in which you would like to pay them off. Of course, you can simply spread your payments around evenly between each lender, but many people have had success with this plan. How you rank your debts is up to you, some choose to go by the smallest debts first, while others believe they should be ranked in accordance to their interest rate.
- You've figured out how much money you owe and decided an order in which to repay it, now it's time to examine your expendable income. Assuming you earn approximately the same amount each month, you can begin subtracting your monthly expenses. Phone bills, utilities, and rent/mortgage are a few expenses that everyone has to deal with every month. Try to estimate your other expenses as well, such as food and entertainment. Whatever is left represents your monthly expendable income, most of which should be put toward debt.
- You're ready to start paying off your various debts, but you should first decide how much to pay on each one. The rankings you previously made should be of great assistance here. Some people simply put all of their money toward their #1 ranked debt, while only making minimum payments on the rest. This can be an effective repayment plan, since you can begin snowballing payments once you get a couple of the debts paid off.

- Depending on how much total debt you've accumulated, this repayment plan should have you debt free faster than you could have ever imagined. However, if you're not making the kind of headway you'd like, don't be afraid to ask for help.
